🚀 The AI Trend Oracle Report
New Reporting Shows You More. It Still Can't Tell You Why |
|
A report that shows you more isn't the same as a report that tells you more. This week made that distinction concrete twice. |

🚨 This Week's Market Intelligence |
|
Google's dedicated generative-AI reporting, announced June 3 and confirmed for worldwide availability August 31, gives sites a documented way to check impressions, pages, countries, and devices for how AI-generated search surfaces treat them. It isn't new this week, but it's new enough that most people haven't fully worked out what it does and doesn't cover, which is exactly the gap worth closing before forming an opinion about it.
A separate update on September 24 added multimodal reporting, covering Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads to Google Search, and Chrome's image-search action. This isn't a wholly separate reporting system sitting apart from everything else. Google's own framing is that multimodal data shows up within the relevant performance reports, including inside the generative AI features report itself. Worth knowing that distinction exists, even though it's one update with a specific scope rather than two unrelated stories.
The genuinely recent news this week is Reddit's. On September 30, Reddit confirmed a documented access-path timeline: RSS retires November 13, unregistered or unengaged public API apps begin losing access January 12, 2027, with remaining public API access ending in March 2027. This is an access-mechanism change, not a content policy change, a dated reminder that the route something takes to reach a piece of content is itself not fixed.

📊 What's Actually Happening |
|
We spent part of this week reading through Google's generative-AI reporting documentation carefully, not importing anything into Axis, just making sure we had the scope right before saying anything about it publicly. Here's the accurate boundary. The dedicated generative-AI report covers impressions, pages, countries, and devices. It does not cover query-level intent, recommendation outcomes, or conversions. That's a limitation of this specific report, not of Search Console broadly: Google already counts AI Mode and AI Overview activity, including click data, within its overall Search Console performance methodology. The new dedicated report simply doesn't fold that into its own breakout.
That distinction matters because it's easy to round "the dedicated AI report doesn't show clicks" up to "Google doesn't measure AI-related clicks at all," which isn't accurate and isn't what Google is actually saying.

🔍 Featured Insight |
|
Reddit's access-path timeline is a good prompt for a question that goes well beyond Reddit: when an AI answer includes or references something, what does that actually establish about how the content was reached? Less than it might seem. Presence in an answer could reflect a live retrieval, an indexed copy, a cached version, a provider partnership, or some other mechanism nobody outside the model provider can directly observe. What an AI answer doesn't establish is which of those happened, or when. Reddit's changes don't prove anything about how AI behavior involving Reddit content will or won't shift. They do mean that if something changes around these specific dates, an access-path change is now a documented, dated variable worth checking, not a cause that's already been established.

🎯 This Week's Strategic Lens |
|
Here's the throughline. A new report, however well-scoped, tells you about exposure. A changing access route tells you about mechanism. Neither one, on its own, tells you about cause. Treating either as more than what it is is where overreach in this category tends to start, and it's an easy trap to fall into even with good intentions.

👨💻 Founder's Note |
|
I went back and forth this week on how much to make of Google's reporting update, since it's been live for months and I didn't want to write about it as if it just happened.
What's actually new is how much clearer the scope got once I sat with the documentation properly, including a dimension, pages, that an earlier pass at this material had left out by mistake.
That's worth saying plainly. An earlier draft undercounted what the report covers. Getting the scope exactly right, even when it means admitting an earlier version was incomplete, matters more here than getting to a tidy conclusion quickly.

Three Questions for Any New Reporting Surface
Before treating a new report, dashboard, or policy change as proof of anything:
1. What dimension does this actually measure?
2. What does it explicitly not cover, and is that a limit of this specific report or of the whole system?
3. What's the earliest point you could reasonably credit a change in this report to something you did, versus normal platform-side variation?
If you can't answer all three, you have a new data source. You don't yet have a new conclusion.

🛠 Coming Next Week
Thursday, we're taking a closer look at a research paper on cross-provider agreement in AI discoverability failures. The headline number needs more context than headline numbers usually get, and we think the more careful version of the story is more useful than the quick one.
